World First Bodybuilder, And How The Word Even Developed The Term BODYBUILDING?
Talking about the world first bodybuilder will lead us to talk first about the bodybuilding history but first let's see what is meant by ‘bodybuilding’.
Define Bodybuilding?
Bodybuilding is the control and development of muscles by the using of progressive resistance exercises.
What is meant by progressive resistance exercises,
is the utilization of the gravity force to generate muscles by opposing it.
In other words, It is about using the gravity force of dumbbells and weight lifting stacks (or any heavy objects) to build muscles.
The history of bodybuilding from the very beginning..
Long ages ago in ancient Greek and ancient Egypt they used to lift stones for obtaining strength,
and it was pretty well-known in Europe in the late of the18th century and the beginnings of the 19th century.

His Life Before Bodybuilding
The German Eugen Sandow was the first man to show off his physique for a paying audience.
His real name is Friedrich Wilhelm Muller,
He was born in 1867 and is referred to, nowadays, as “the father of modern bodybuilding”.
How His Talent In Bodybuilding Was Discovered?
At First he starts his career as a circus athlete,
later on in a place like the gymnasium today,
someone named Durlacher has noticed Sandow strength and asked him to go to England, especially London for participating in the strongmen competition.
Eugen Sandow went to London and won, hands down,
he immediately became a famous superstar for his strength and physique.

Flo Ziegfeld, in 1893, took Sandow to World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago,
and in that show Flo has discovered that the audience was more interested in his physique not in the amount of weight Sandow is lifting.
so Ziegfeld took that in concern and asked him to perform posing and showing off his enlarged muscles for the audience,
and that was the beginning of the nowadays bodybuilding concept.
Eugen Sandow Bodybuilding Career
Later on, in 1894 Sandow was filmed in a short silent series of 3 films just posing and showing off his muscles, and they were a hit back then
In the same year he also appeared in an early motion picture exhibition film,
that was demonstrated in a device known as Kinetoscope, which can be watched by one individual at a time through a hole called peephole.
The Peephole was the very first idea of the commercial advertising.

- Eugen Sandow, the world first bodybuilder,
opened an institute that is very close to the nowadays gymnasium,
in which he taught interested people about his dietary habits and how to gain muscles by exercising and weightlifting.
- In 1898 he published a magazine called physical culture,
then its name was changed to Sandow's magazine of physical culture.
- He also published many books like “ strength and how to obtain it” and “Sandow's system of physical training”.
- In his last book the term 'BODYBUILDING’ was mentioned for the first time in history.
- He invented many devices for helping athletes building more muscles,
- like the spring-grip dumbbells and the rubber strands.
- In 1901 Sandow organized the very first Bodybuilding competition in London at the Royal Albert Hall,
where 3 judges was there,
and there was overwhelming crowd,
The hall was jam-packed to the extent that most of the audience was sent back home.
Eugen Sandow is now the true world first bodybuilder,
So his job included traveling across the world to advertise and globalize the new concept of Bodybuilding.
His Death
- Eugen Sandow passed away in London in 1925 of a brain hemorrhage as the newspapers said.
- but his legacy is immortalized by the concept of Bodybuilding that he was a leading pioneer in it and the ultimate world first bodybuilder
- And his body is considered as the ultimate Bodybuilding reward represented in the statue of Mr Olympia.
